To use the carrier update you need the free SDK 3.0 and to put this in the terminal "defaults write com.apple.iTunes carrier-testing -bool TRUE" then it should work. I just tested this and sadly it doesn't work with the original EDGE iPhone.

Everything works fine up to item #11. When I go to update, i can see the ippc file but my itunes does not recognize it as an update. The open button stays greyed out when I highlight the file. I am on 3.0 beta 4 and itunes 8.2b10

Absenth is absolutely correct.

Personally I refuse to touch a friend or relative's machine (or any personal machine really), ever, for just the reasons outlined. You *will* become tech support for that person.

I keep a stash of Best Buy's "Geek Squad" cards in my wallet. -> "Oh no, I don't work on *those* kind of computers, the stuff I work on looks more like a black pizza-box with no monitor or keybard, but *these* guys can *totally* help you out!"

Works great.

You're not a fan of Colloquy? I guess I can see that. Personally I'm using the terminal irc client irssi which doesn't give me a lot of options for growl notifications.

I'm a mIRC user from way back in the day. I remember using Trumpet Winsock on a SLIP connection back in 95ish.

All sound advice. You might also consider telling the family member or friend up front that you are willing to put X amount of time into the computer for free, but anything beyond that is going to cost them. It's also good to set long term expectations. Because you touched someone's computer once does not mean that you are now responsible for everything that ever happens to that computer going forward. Finally to avoid being taken advantage of, I highly recommend setting a small fee for all work done on someone's computer. This will prevent family and friends from asking you to "would you quick look at my machine, I think I have some spyware." followed two days later with "I got a notification of a virus on my machine while surfing the web, would you take a quick look." etc.

In any case great post!

Ken I agree. Honestly I think it is temp. As for the question you always see blogs and posts on the web talking about the ethics of the web. Just thought I would get users opinions on what they think. Thank your for you comment! :)

There's no reason to assume this is permanent and not just a temporary measure to manage server activity. They've been flakey for weeks now, they probably just don't want too many people to drop a user in a short amount of time.

Also, whether it's "right" is just a silly (i.e. empty) question. The question is simply whether it's in their best interest.

A very informative post :)

The only app I would not recommend in this little collection is CCleaner. ATF cleaner is safer and alot easier to use as it only gets rid of the rubbish. It has been reported that CCleaner removes stuff it shouldn't.

Other than that, I can pick one out of all of these that I actually do use and install on a fresh Windows XP install. Especially ObjectDock - one of my favourite little tools :)
