On this week’s episode of Geekologist Deep Dish Radio, Dan, Dave, and Grady are talking data. The show starts out with a discussion about what kind of data is created in both the home and business environments, and what it is used for. The team then discuss the value of data in various business scenarios, such as product and customer data for retail shops, financial data for banks and credit card companies, and medical data in the health care industry. After a brief rant about software data collection and computer security, the discussion continues with the differences between structured and unstructured data, as well as a sneak peek of future episodes relating to data storage optimization and data availability.

I have noticed that nowadays people are relying more and more on stats to confirm that the website they own or run is growing in a positive manner. Be it with Google Analytics, Website Outlook or other comparable site’s the information can be misleading and inaccurate.

Tons of people rely on Website Outlook each day to get a status update on what they could possibly get if they decided to sell their domain name or site as a whole. The real question is how accurate are these services? In reality in no shape, size or way are websites similar to websiteoutlook.com any where near accurate. The reason behind this is in the way that Website Outlook and it’s competitors gets their numbers. The entire service is relying on your ad revenue, number of daily site hits and your overall freshness of your site. a.k.a how long it has been since changes have been made to your site. Using this method results can be spastic, one day telling you that your site is worth hundreds of dollars more that what it was worth yesterday or a week ago. Thus making this a very poor way to judge organic and dynamic growth.

A more accurate way in predicting the overall value of your site is calculate how much you make per month in revenue and multiply that by a factor of 10 or higher depending on the overall size of your site. So for example Geekologist for the month of January has made $32.67 in ad-sense revenue so $32.67*10 = $326.70 Using this method is much more accurate in predicting what you might actually be offered if someone contacted you about a possible purchase.

It is a shame that site like Website Outlook provide such terrible insight into the overall value of websites and instill false hope in websites that make no revenue. A website that makes no revenue is worth nothing to someone looking to buy, sponsors or even possible investors. Without any revenue model how can those investor, sponsors or purchasers expect to get any return investment.

If you are truly looking for a scale to judge your website I suggest using Google Analytics or just play it by ear. Regardless of how many site hits you get it is always going to be the overall experience that you give the readers, viewers, or listeners that will keep them coming back.

Do you have a computer with Windows Vista installed? Does that windows vista system not have the greatest graphics card onboard? Well Windows has finally made a huge improvement to the graphics subsystem to help you out. Microsoft is aiming to help GPU-less folks by allowing a plain old CPU to act as a graphics hardware accelerator. This entire system is designed to run on a processor as little as 800Mhz but a dual-core or higher CPU is recommended. In private benchmark testings using intel integrated graphics and an i7 processor the team was able to get a whopping 7.6 FPS at 800×600. This is about a 1.5 FPS improvement over the integrated graphics alone. Although the WARP (or Windows Advanced Rasterization Platform) was designed to help out people without GPU’s to improve the Aero experience, I am really excited to see how this technology evolves, and what it means in terms of a more pleasing experience in Windows 7.

Do you remember back when you were in school (or maybe you still are in school), when you would write notes to your friends? There was always that factor that you may get caught by your teacher, and get the whole note read aloud to the class! And, wouldn’t it just be awful if your secret crush heard that you liked them?

So, what if you could send a secure note? By secure, I mean nobody could read it besides the person that it was intended for. Well, you can! With Whisper Bot, you can send a note to your friend, colleague or co-worker. Not only can you send this note, but you can secure it as well! Whisper Bot allows you to secure your note with a password, that you share with only the person the note is being sent to.

Now you do not have to worry about your e-mail not being encrypted, or those third-party services that are sort of secure. Whisper Bot ensures that it is 100% secure.

Today will truly be a historical event in our history. With a new age and era rapidly approaching. I hope that everyone tunes in to see the presidential inauguration and see history of the first African American President as he is sworn into office.

Hey guys, it’s The App Guru here and  here’s an awesome game that is extremely addicting and hard to put down. This game consists of you controlling a very colorful block as you venture across the map through all the corners and traps. You have to reach the end of the level where  your block will suddenly turn into a colorful batch of liquid soaring into the air. You control your block by simply moving your finger in the direction you want to the block to go. This is a very simple game that almost anyone can pick up. It also has tons of challenging levels to keep you entertained. Overall I highly recommend this app and you can purchase it in the App Store for $5.99.

Today’s iPhone and iPod Touch App Review is going to be on an application that will challenge your brain! This is a fun game that has many mini-games inside that challenge different parts of your brain. You can play quick play and pick the section you want to try or you could simply pick brain test and it will give you a whole brain test that can be very challenging. Overall I like this game a lot, and it can save you from a base case of boredom. You can purchase this application in the App Store for only, $.99! Today I got an interesting opportunity to try a cool new service from Microsoft. Thanks to Jeff in the chat room for mentioning Windows Live Mesh. At first I really had no idea what it was and considering Jeff and I were talking about Windows 7 I honestly thought it had something to do with wireless mesh networking. However come to find out it is a free service from Microsoft similar to Drop Box.

Here are some of the key features of Windows Live Mesh:

Device Page -

  • The place to manage and edit all your devices in your mesh. This includes PC’s, Mac’s and Mobile devices.
  • Links to download software for new devices. Currently the software supports Mac OS X Leopard, Windows XP SP2 and Vista. However I was able to run it without issue on the Windows 7 Beta

Live Desktop – This is my mind is really cool! Live Desktop is an online desktop environment that shows you all the files that you are syncing and “watching” in real time.

  • 5GB of free online data storage.
  • See all synced folders and files without having to be at one of the devices in your mesh.
  • Access all your files and folders of any computer or device with a web browser.

Mesh Bar – Live Mesh is not just an online sync utility but also a collaboration tool. Here are a few things you can do with the mesh bar.

  • Manage members and invite new people to see your files and folders.
  • Post messages and see news on a folder.
  • Built in support with windows live messenger to allow you to chat with members.
  • Allows you to change permissions and settings to a synced folder on your mesh.

Remote Desktop -

  • Access and manage a system across the globe. Really cool if you remember something that happens to not be in your synced folders or you just want to pull up a program on your remote computer.

Remote Desktop has potential but I am unsure if it will support all version of windows vista and windows 7. I also expect the support for remote desktop to not be included in the Mac version of the software.

I love that Microsoft is developing new ideas and really pushing to that cloud computing goal. I am excited to see what they have planed for the final version of the software and I will be keeping a close eye on it from now till then. If you are curious and what to check it out head over to http://mesh.com
